The Bermuda delegation attending this week's high-end Conference on the global submarine cable industry said it would promote the island as a strategic hub for submarine cable systems in the Atlantic region.
The triennial SubOptic Cable Festival will be held this week in New Orleans, Louisiana. The four-day summit will attract more than 800 participants, including technology giants such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon.
The Bermuda delegation said, "We are committed to promoting Bermuda as an information hub in the Atlantic Ocean, interconnecting the submarine optical cable system built by the world's largest technology companies. The government's commitment will help Bermuda diversify its economy, and further progress is being made through legislation, which could create economic growth and employment opportunities in Bermuda and boost the island's technological needs for the future.
At present, more than 97% of the world's information is transmitted through optical cable, making it an indispensable information for the interconnected society and business center. Bermuda's superior geographical location creates a reasonable hub for submarine optical cable systems connecting the Americas and Western Europe.
